Children of Africa - Series
This series of African children first came to me in my dreams. I have always had a fascination with the African culture, the energy of the people and their resilience. I was compelled to paint the lost children from my dreams and bring them to light. Each painting provides a story of the child.
in hiding
These are the children of Africa, In Hiding and their plight to persevere in spite of the devastating effects of war and debilitating circumstances of their environment.
They are challenged with their fears, anger and faith, who have survived in spite of their loss and fallen sense of values, they have gone beyond survival.

Jacqueline is seven years old. She's mostly scared but doesn't know how to voice the fear so she stays quiet.
Jacqueline lost her parents and younger brother when she was around two years old. Her degree of safety is still threatened due to the militant era but there is a hint of faith that gives strength to her vulnerability.

Henry is five years old. He's scared and withdrawn and terribly shy. He can't remember the last time his mother held him. His abandonment is deep, he's lost and alone, yet from someone understanding he epitomizes the meaning of sweetness.
From the inviting presence of vulnerability and naiveness, from the depths of hell and back, Henry is my Angel.

Erica is five years old, strong willed and stubborn. This is what has helped her survive in these frightening times. Her family taken from her in one night.
She once was mischievous and lively but the context of her being has receded into the shadows. I often wonder what repercussions Erica will conform to and yet her determination manifests her resilience.

Joeb is eight years old. He's extremely resourceful and sharp. Joeb has seen as much as the others but there's an inner knowing that doesn't seem to waiver from his consciousness. He has made peace with his demons and see's opportunities as opposed to misfortunes.
Joeb acknowledges his fears and sorrow but is transcended in the acceptance of it.

Isabella is nine years old. She has been deeply wounded and abused at such an early age that a part of her was alienated. She can be cold and hurtful but has the innate ability to sense approaching danger which can make her an ally.
Isabella is someone to be wary of but most of all she is someone who needs to be forgiven and forgive.

Anika is four years old, she was found alone in the forest. Her body appeared lifeless amongst the green growth.
Her nurturing is found in the suckling of her thumb, the surrogate pacifier. Her abandonment will be felt deep within her for the rest of her life. However, she will breathe new life with the openness of her heart.

Sasha is fifteen and Jessie is four years old, siblings from birth . The grunt of responsibility that Sasha bears is unbearable at times. Yet she confronts her position with tenaciousness. She will protect Jessie to the end.
Jessie relies on Sasha more than ever. Her only alternative against abandonment is to trust in the courage of Sasha.

Jake is twelve years old and Karl is ten. They are all that is left of family. They watched their parents perish in a frenzy of violence and awoke in the forest still numb from what they had witnessed.
They count on each other for survival, and their healing comes from the secrets they share with the bond between brothers that has never been so great.
